"Thorough Waste Separation Leads to Higher Recycling Rates"
SDGs-Themed Outreach Class Held at Elementary School

An SDGs-themed outreach class conducted by the Yu Laboratory, Division of International Political Economy, Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, was featured on a local news program N Sta Miyagi by TBC Tohoku Broadcasting.

On June 17, three booths related to resource recycling and other environmental topics were set up by Tohoku University and participating companies at Yamoto Nishi Elementary School in Higashimatsushima City, Miyagi Prefecture. Fifty 4th-grade students visited each booth, where they learned about environmental issues such as decarbonization, resource circulation, and sustainable community development. Through hands-on activities, the students also understood that thorough waste separation can lead to higher recycling rates.

Since being selected as an "SDGs Future City" by the Japanese government in 2018, Higashimatsushima City has been collaborating with our graduate school to implement these SDGs outreach classes in local elementary schools.
