Qualifications

Certificate of Educational Personnel License (Specialized)

  • In the Graduate School, students who have completed the first two years of the master's course (master's) can obtain the following specialized licenses for junior high school and high school.
    Department of International Cultural Studies
    Junior High School Teaching Certificate (English)
    Senior High School Teaching Certificate (English)
  • However, only those who have obtained a first-class junior high school teacher's license (English) or a first-class senior high school teacher's license (English) during their undergraduate studies and who have completed the prescribed subjects (courses related to English subjects) and credits while in the Graduate School are eligible to obtain a special license.
  • Please note that it is very difficult to obtain both a first class license and a special training license during the two years of study at the Graduate School.

Diploma Policy

Master's course of 2 years

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies shall confer a master's degree to students who have achieved the following objectives.

  • Possess a broad interdisciplinary perspective, the ability to conduct original research based on specialized knowledge and skills acquired through education from a fusion of the humanities and sciences, and the ability to work in a highly specialized profession.
  • With high ethical standards and a sense of responsibility, contribute academically to the broad range of needs demanded by global society and contribute to the development of society as a whole.
  • Possess an excellent international perspective and communication skills essential for receiving and disseminating world-class research content, and acquire a broad range of liberal arts and comprehensive, practical problem-solving skills, which can be applied to academic research and highly specialized professions.

Doctoral course (3 years)

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies will award doctoral degrees to students who have achieved the following goals.

  • The student has the ability to independently carry out original research and provide guidance in his/her major field of study based on a wealth of academic knowledge and advanced specialized knowledge and skills, or has outstanding ability to engage in a highly specialized occupation.
  • With high ethical standards and a sense of responsibility, they are able to make high-level academic contributions to the broad range of needs demanded by global society and contribute significantly to the development of society as a whole.
  • Possess an excellent international perspective and communication skills essential for receiving and disseminating advanced research of an international standard, and acquire a wide range of education and comprehensive, practical problem-solving skills, which will enable them to lead research in their field in Japan and abroad, or to lead their profession as leaders in highly specialized fields of work. The student should be able to.

Curriculum Policy

Master's course of 2 years

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies organizes and implements educational programs based on the following policies so that students can achieve the goals indicated in the Diploma Policy.

  • Research education methods,
    (1)“Individual guidance” in accordance with students' research topics
    (2)“Comprehensive guidance” by a team of course instructors in comprehensive seminar courses
    (3) “Overall guidance” by all faculty members of the Graduate School at various research presentation meetings
    and realize a detailed guidance system by combining these methods in an appropriate manner.
    As a visible form of “overall guidance,” the “degree conferment promotion program” will be implemented to clearly indicate the year-by-year progression of dissertation preparation as a program and promote the improvement of students' problem-solving and presentation skills.
  • To cultivate high ethical standards in research, both on and off campus, “Ethics for Research” will be offered in both Japanese and English.
  • As common subjects, we will offer “Japanese Language Skills for Research” to help international students acquire the ability to promote research, and “English Skills for Research” to foster advanced operational skills in English and improve skills in searching for information, organizing data, writing papers, and presenting research in English, which are necessary for research.
  • Establish the “Integrated Language Science Course” as a degree course in English, offering world-class courses entirely in English and promoting language research and education from multiple perspectives, including linguistics, psychology, information science, and brain science.
    The “Global Governance and Sustainable Development Program” will be established as a degree course also in English, and education and research will be conducted in English to contribute to understanding the structure of issues related to governance, the environment, and development, and to formulating solutions to such issues. Through this program, we aim to develop human resources who can contribute to the development of society in Japan and abroad.
  • Conduct class evaluation questionnaires at the end of each semester to accurately grasp students' needs and to improve the quality of classes in the following semester.
  • The results of the research guidance will be consolidated in the “Student Guidance Record” at the end of each academic year, etc., to provide higher quality research guidance, and the review and examination of research results based on the master's thesis or a specific subject will be conducted appropriately. Examinations and examinations of research results will be conducted in accordance with the “Criteria for the Evaluation of Research Results of Master's Theses in International Cultural Studies,” which is provided separately.

Doctoral course (3 years)

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies organizes and implements educational programs based on the following policies so that students can achieve the goals indicated in the Diploma Policy.

  • Based on the “Program for the Promotion of Degree Conferral,” provide individual, comprehensive, and holistic research guidance systems for thesis preparation, etc., and promote the acquisition of rich academic knowledge, advanced specialized knowledge in the major field, and excellent presentation skills.
  • Provide opportunities to foster the high ethical standards and leadership required to conduct world-class research, as well as opportunities to learn from cutting-edge research results both domestically and internationally.
  • The evaluation criteria for academic achievements shall be clearly stated in Article 12 of the “Regulations of the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University”, and research results shall be appropriately reviewed and examined based on the doctoral dissertation and research achievements. The examination and examination of research results shall be conducted in accordance with the “Criteria for the Evaluation of Doctoral Theses in the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies” provided separately.
