Curriculum Policy
Master's Program (2-year course)
The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies (GSICS) at Tohoku University promotes interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary graduate education and research, and aims to provide students with comprehensive and specialized knowledge and abilities in their major fields through guidance and support in their research project and the preparation of their theses.
In order to achieve the goals stated in the Diploma Policy, we have developed and implemented the following educational policies for master’s students:
-
We organize research education methods into
(1)“individual instruction” by supervisors based on students’ research topics,
(2)“integrated instruction” by a team of course faculty members at course seminars, and
(3) “overall instruction” by all GSICS staff in the research presentations.
By combining these three methods in an appropriate manner, we are attempting to achieve a meticulous guidance system.
We implement the “Degree Promotion Program” as a visible form of “overall instruction” in order to promote students’ problem-solving and presentation skills by demonstrating the annual progress in thesis preparation. - We offer “Ethics for Academic Research” classes in both Japanese and English to help students develop high ethical standards for research inside and outside the university.
- We provide two language courses for research: “Japanese Language Skills for Research” to help international students acquire Japanese language skills to promote their research in Japanese, and “English Language Skills for Research” not only to develop advanced English language skills but also to improve their skills in searching for necessary information, organizing data, writing papers, and presenting research in English. In addition, we have opened “Introduction to Statistics” in both Japanese and English, providing students with the essential knowledge for the analysis of statistical data necessary for quantitative research and investigation.
- We have two courses that offer world-class instruction entirely in English: International Graduate Program in Language Sciences (IGPLS) and Graduate Program in Global Governance & Sustainable Development (G2SD). IGPLS promotes linguistic research and education from multiple perspectives, including linguistics, psychology, information science, cognitive science, and neuroscience. G2SD conducts education and research that contributes to understanding the structure of issues related to governance, environment, and development in order to foster human resources who can contribute to the development of society at home and abroad.
- We conduct a class assessment survey at the end of each semester to accurately grasp the needs of students and improve the quality of classes in the following semesters.
- We summarize the results of the research guidance in the “Research Guidance Record” at the end of each academic year in order to provide higher quality research guidance, and properly review and examine research results based on the master’s thesis and specific assignments. Review and examination will be conducted in accordance with the “Criteria for the Evaluation of Theses and Dissertations at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University.”
