About the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies

International cultural explorers who create the future

Tohoku University Graduate School of International Cultural Studies was established in 1993 as the first independent graduate school in Tohoku University. The Graduate School aims to conduct interdisciplinary and comprehensive education and research on international regional culture, cultural exchange, and language and culture, and to nurture outstanding human resources who can play an active role and contribute to the international community.

With the rapid globalization of modern society, economic, cultural, and human exchanges are progressing beyond the framework of nations. At the same time, however, “lack of understanding” of culture, religion, and history often leads to international friction and conflict, which can develop into serious problems.

Transcending barriers of history, culture, and language to understand a changing world and envision a future of harmonious coexistence

The term “international culture” refers to the process through which the cultures of various regions are shaped and transformed by intercultural exchange while preserving their historical backgrounds. We examine “international culture” comprehensively from the following perspectives:

  • Developing an integrated understanding of diverse fields, including language, literature, thought, history, and society
  • Investigating the significance and challenges of cultural exchange in today’s international society
  • Exploring practical approaches to multicultural coexistence, international peace, and global issues

Through these efforts, we aim to establish “international culture” as an academic discipline by offering new research perspectives that transcend the boundaries of conventional fields of study.

Tackling the complex challenges of the international community and carving out a sustainable future through the power of learning

We aim to nurture individuals with both a broad perspective and advanced expertise, without confining themselves to a narrow field of specialization.

  • Researchers who deepen international cultural understanding and exchange
  • Highly skilled professionals who can address practical international issues
  • Individuals who seek practical solutions to multicultural coexistence, international peace, and global challenges

Through interdisciplinary study, we strive to cultivate individuals who can contribute to promoting international mutual understanding, fostering peaceful coexistence, and solving global issues. We invite you to become a bridge connecting the world, regions, and diverse cultures, and to build a future of international engagement from here.

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University, sincerely looks forward to seeing you take on new challenges.
