Graduate Program in Global Governance & Sustainable Development(G2SD)

G2SD is a new interdisciplinary program offered by the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies at Tohoku University. It fosters the ability to confront the common challenges of global governance and sustainable development for all humankind through critical theory-testing and problem-solving research.

The purpose of this program is to develop the capacity to address two of the challenges facing the world today: global governance and sustainable development.

The issues associated with these challenges are complex and intertwined. For example, the goal of “governance” may include maintaining a balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The concept of “development” has been broadened to encompass issues such as human security and resource recycling. Furthermore, in managing the “environment” in the global community, local efforts based on sound governance and human development may become indispensable.

With the above in mind, what is required in “global governance” and “sustainable development” is the ability to construct new analytical frameworks by utilizing interdisciplinary knowledge, without being bound by existing modes of thinking. This program aims to cultivate such abilities through critical theoretical examination and problem-solving research.
