"An Old Tale Retold? Utopian Cosmopolitanism in Chinese Political Discourse – Problematizing new trends in light of their ancient roots"

The Graduate School of International Cultural Studies (GSICS) is pleased to host an International Lecture by Dr. Lisa Indraccolo, Associate Professor of Chinese Studies at Tallinn University, Estonia.

A new form of utopian cosmopolitanism is currently being embraced in Chinese politico-philosophical discourse. In particular, contemporary readings of the concept of tianxia (All-under-Heaven) and critical re-interpretations of Chinese historical cosmopolitanism have attracted widespread critical attention. This talk aims at bringing to the fore the unifying thread of these contemporary approaches—a New Confucian vision for an alternative world order—through an analysis of their key terms. The talk further problematizes these approaches against early conceptualizations of the “Other” and of the physical and cultural space of the empire, taking the case of early encounters with Japan as a case study.

We warmly welcome all those who are interested in this topic.
