◆ Abstract:
Japan has seen a rapid rise in single-person households due to increasing unmarried rates and declining fertility. This transition toward a “solo society” is not unique to Japan but is also striking in Germany. Choosing to live alone is not inherently problematic; however, Japan’s social security system operates under the assumption that individuals are married, have children, or live with family. As the population of unmarried and childless single adults grows, questions arise regarding how to support people in their later years or at the end of life.
Through comparison with Germany, this lecture examines how alternative safety nets—distinct from conventional family-based models—could be developed.
