Project Description
In the Philippines, the consumption and disposal of single-use plastics in coastal areas, particularly in tourist destinations, have been increasing, while recycling infrastructure remains underdeveloped, leading to worsening plastic waste leakage into the marine environment. This study, therefore, focuses on Camiguin Island (Catarman), a tourist island, as a case study to investigate the actual situations of locally generated plastic waste and marine pollution. It aims to clarify the mechanisms of marine plastic leakage and identify challenges in plastic recycling. Through social surveys, the study examines plastic use, disposal, recycling behaviors, and environmental awareness among residents and tourists. In addition, based on interviews with local governments, businesses, and research institutions, as well as site visits to relevant facilities, the study explores effective measures to reduce plastic waste and improve recycling rates.
