Earthquake Activity and Government Measures

Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, the country has experienced a series of damaging earthquakes, including the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake, and the Kumamoto Earthquake in July 2026.
This lecture will provide an overview of these damaging earthquakes from the perspective of seismic activity and discuss how scientific knowledge of earthquakes has been utilized by the Japanese government in developing disaster management policies and measures, and how these efforts have evolved over time.
