A new research paper led by Gaia Oikawa (Doctoral Student, Department of Applied Linguistics) and Associate Professor Takumi Uchihara has been published in Studies in Second Language Acquisition.
This study investigates the effects of contextual diversity on incidental L2 vocabulary learning through reading. Departing from previous research that compared identical and non-identical texts, this study manipulated contextual diversity at a broader level, specifically examining the degree of variation in genres and topics across different texts. The findings indicate that while higher contextual diversity potentially enhances long-term learning outcomes, such benefits may not be achieved without sufficient vocabulary proficiency (suggesting that lower contextual diversity might be more effective for less proficient learners).
