SDGs Outreach Workshops Conducted at Elementary Schools in Higashimatsushima City, an SDGs Future City
The Yu Laboratory of International Political Economy at the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies, Tohoku University, has organized SDGs outreach classes for elementary schools in Higashimatsushima City, an SDGs Future City, in collaboration with companies and universities since 2019. These classes focus on sustainability and resource circulation and are characterized by their hands-on approach involving cooperation among diverse actors.
As the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), carbon neutrality, and a circular economy becomes increasingly important, it is highly meaningful to explain sustainability and resource circulation to children in disaster-affected areas in an accessible way. Through experiential learning, students can directly engage with issues such as climate change, marine pollution, waste management and recycling, peace, disabilities, disasters, risks, and international relations. Such opportunities provide valuable experiences that are difficult to obtain through ordinary classroom education.
The program also aims to deepen students’ understanding of how to build a sustainable and emotionally enriching society by promoting environmental sustainability, social safety and peace, and an inclusive society without disparities.
