The Contemporary Japanese Media and Gender Studies Chair promotes interdisciplinary research on media and gender, which are becoming increasingly important for understanding contemporary society. The Chair covers diverse areas such as sociology, gender studies, tourism studies, visual and media studies, and popular culture studies.
In today's globalized world, pop culture originating from Japan, such as manga, anime, and video games, is spreading and being accepted around the world. In Japan, works from other Asian countries and regions are also being accepted, and this is giving rise to the birth of new cultures. This course will include the dynamism of such cultural exchanges.
Gender is a perspective that cannot be ignored in understanding contemporary Japanese society and culture. Today, no area of society can be analyzed without a gender perspective. Gender and sexuality are also necessary perspectives to realize a just society where diversity is respected and included.
This course welcomes students who are interested in the issues of Japanese culture and contemporary Japanese society, and who are willing to solve their own questions with a broad perspective.
