Introduction

After completing my undergraduate degree at Waseda University, I did an MA in English Language Teaching at the University of Reading, and a PhD in Applied Linguistics at Western University. Prior to joining the Graduate School of International Cultural Studies (GSICS) and International Graduate Program in Language Sciences (IGPLS) at Tohoku University in 2023, I taught English for academic purposes, TESOL, and Applied Linguistics in Japan and Canada. My research aims to elucidate the mechanisms of second language vocabulary acquisition and contribute to the teaching of foreign languages in the classroom environment. In particular, my research interests include incidental and intentional vocabulary learning, spoken vocabulary acquisition, productive vocabulary assessment, individual differences in vocabulary acquisition, the relationship between vocabulary knowledge and second language oral proficiency (e.g., listening and speaking), the role of vocabulary knowledge in English medium instruction (EMI), the interface between vocabulary and pronunciation knowledge, and explicit vs. implicit vocabulary knowledge. Many of my research achievements to date have been made in collaboration with domestic and international researchers and students, resulting in publications from internationally recognized journals including Language Learning, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, The Modern Language Journal, TESOL Quarterly, and Language Teaching Research. In 2022, I received a Waseda Research Award for High Impact Publication (for an introduction video of my research program, see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRP_EpbRV-8). I have served on the TESOL Quarterly editorial board since March 2022. I am keen to undertake various interdisciplinary studies utilizing knowledge from fields such as brain science and psychology. I am also motivated to continue to disseminate my research from Tohoku to the world.
