Mission Statement

The mission of the Gender and Communication Section is to foster and encourage any and all aspects of scholarship relating to the nexus of gender and communication.

We aim to put scholars in touch with each other via a members' directory. This can assist in networking, better informing the community of gender/communication-related scholarship, and potentially lead to joint research and publication possibilities.

We also hope to serve, in some degree, as a clearinghouse for information about gender-related and feminist activities and scholarship: whether recent publications, grant opportunities, conferences, forums and newsletters.

The Gender Section seeks inclusivity, meaning that it hopes to encourage and build a membership that is diverse. We strive for a membership that knows no restrictions in terms of racial, ethnic, national, gender, ideological or philosophical descriptions.

Finally, our section is committed to transcending the often artificial boundaries that the academy has tended to impose on the sciences. Applied to the areas of media and communication, this means joining with other sections of IAMCR to explore the interstices of gender and areas such as audience and reception, journalism, law, community, history, international communication, sport, education, political communication, political economy, psychology, public opinion, and technology.

So, too, does this mean joining forces with extant IAMCR Working Groups—such as popular culture, HIV/AIDS, diaspora, health, Islam, and the environment.

Although one of IAMCR's largest sections, our membership is not always the most cohesive. In the coming year we seek, through the introduction of structural reorganization—as well as various initiatives we will be announcing periodically on these pages—to increase intra-sectional communication and build a tighter network of scholars.

We look forward to your involvement in bringing these goals to fruition.
