Color's Cultural Universals


Historically, certain colors have been associated with gender: blue for boys, pink for girls

In commercials in Japan, such associations consistently appear.




Persuasively for the "universal" thesis:

  1. The inverse color associations (i.e. pink for boys, blue for girls) can not be found;

  2. This same color association can be found in ads in other countries, such as America...




... suggesting that there is something relatively universal about certain color codes vis-a-vis gender

at least in advertising...
